A spectacular bidding war unfolded for the 11th Cadbury’s Conundrum Egg known as ‘Cuckoo Cuckoo’.
Offered as lot 1 in Batemans’ inaugural ‘Curated & Collectable Sale’ with estimates of £15,000 – £20,000, interest and bidding from around the world launched this unique golden treasure to an incredible hammer price of £95,000 setting a new Auction House and World Record for a Conundrum Egg in the process!
Thousands of website visits to the lot page prior to the auction came from across the globe, including the USA, Japan, Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, and Austria, showing the universal appeal of such an beautiful piece of advertising and jewellery history.
Following the recent launch with new partner platform Auctionet, Batemans had high hopes for this particular lot but nothing prepared them for what happened at 10am on Saturday 1st August…
After veteran Auctioneer David Palmer’s opening sale remarks and with three online bidding platforms up and running, the Batemans’ Staff waited with baited breath to see what would happen after weeks of pre-sale interest.
Bidding started gingerly at £17,000, £18,000 but then moved to £20,000, £22,000, and £24,000, with several different bidders on different platforms leaping in to take the lead. David then called out the bids up to £30,000 at which point two bidders left everyone else behind powering through £40,000 – £50,000 – £60,000 – £70,000 – £80,000 – £90,000 and finally, incredibly, settling at a final hammer price of £95,000!
Lasting over three minutes and with more than 50 bids taken, the 22ct gold treasure soared into the stratosphere to a truly extraordinary result…
And that was only the first lot of the sale!
