Hammer
£3,500
Jean Shepeard (British, 1904-1989): a sketchbook containing a possible charcoal portrait of the artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992), 22.5 by 17.5cm, together with other portraits, most are signed, also including indistinct handwritten notes, a/f.
Jean Shepeard was the only woman to ever exhibit with Bacon, the 1929 exhibition, was Bacon's second and it also included works by the Australian artist Roy de Meistre. Although Bacon's name is the most prominent on the exhibition flyer, Shepeard contributed to 'well over half the listed items in the show' (Richard Shone, 'The Burlington Magazine' Vol. 138, No. 1117, Apr. 1996, pp. 253-255). Bacon is believed to have destroyed the artworks from this early period and details are scant on his activities in the 1920s/30s.
Provenance- from Doreen Kern Collection (Artist and Sculptor 1931-2021) niece of Jean Shepeard.
