A Japanese lacquer kogo (incense box) in the form of a pelican, Meiji period, 19th century, modelled standing with it's head turned to the left, carved, incised and painted decoration, bears four character signature to base, 6.5 by 8.5 by 10cm high, purchased 15th September 1936 from S. Hayashi, Japanese & Chinese Works of Art, Kyoto, Japan for 15 Yen. Provenance: The Estate of Mr Joseph B. Hay, son of Major-General Arthur K. Hay DSO OBE - 100 years of a military family.
