Catalogue Amendment: it now appears that this is a composite set made up of two or more originals - the difference in the colours of the baize, and the seemingly 'incorrect' style of the bishops and knights, indicate that it might not be completely original.
A composite large sized late 19th century Northern Upright / Edinburgh Upright chess set, likely European, natural boxwood and ebony with weighted and green baize bases, the Kings with urn shaped finials, 4.3 by 12.3cm high, similar Queens, 12.2cm high, Bishops with ball finials, 9.7cm high, Knights as carved horses' heads with flowing manes, 7.8cm high, Rooks as turrets, 6.7cm high, Pawns with ball finials, 2.9 by 5.7cm high, full set with one additional black pawn, in period wooden box with sliding lid, two '1' paper labels affixed inside, King 12.3cm (4.8") high, together with a handmade wooden chess board.
