A Japanese cloisonne yatate (portable brush and ink container), Meiji period, late 19th century, the circular bowl with a hinged shakudo and shibuichi cover cast with three figures walking away, the stem decorated with flowers, apparently unsigned, complete with brush stored inside stem and attached dark blue string with bead attached, string 16cm, bead 1.7cm, overall 4.2 by 17.2 by 2.8cm, purchased 15th September 1936 from S. Hayashi, Japanese & Chinese Works of Art, Kyoto, Japan for 15 Yen. Provenance: The Estate of Mr Joseph B. Hay, son of Major-General Arthur K. Hay DSO OBE - 100 years of a military family.
