After Joseph Farquharson R.A (Scottish 1846-1935) oil on board The joyless winter day. Note: This picture is a copy after 'The Joyless Winter Day', by Scottish artist Joseph Farquharson, which is in the collection of the Tate. Farquharson was famed for his Scottish snow scenes, and, excepting 1914, sent a new one to the Royal Academy every year between 1894 and 1925. 'The Joyless Winter Day' was the first in the series and was painted in the open air, from the relative comfort of the Farquharson's specially constructed mobile painting hut, which contained a stove. This enabled Farquharson to capture the remarkably realistic effects of a snow storm. The sheep, however, were false, fabricated in plaster by a local sculptor.
Frame size 76cm by 51cm, initialled and dated 1914 bottom right.
