A Russian enamel Khodynka cup, dated 1896, also known as The Cup of Sorrows, made for the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II & Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in 1896, bearing the ciphers of Nicholas and Alexandra with the double headed Romanov eagle on the opposing side, these beakers became synonymous with a catastrophic stampede amongst revellers celebrating the coronation, caused partly by rumours that these commemorative beakers each contained a gold coin, and which led to 1,389 deaths at Khodynka Field, Moscow, leading the Tsarina to nickname the commemorative beaker the Cup of Sorrows, 9.5 by 10.5cm high.
