Re: Caribbean / plantation / Jamaica. An important collection of TEN complete letters sent from Jamaica to Britain over a ten-year period from 1829 to 1839, written for the attention of plantation owner Henry Lawes Long, all regarding the slavery plantations, emancipation, Jamaican sugar trade, at Longville Park plantation estate Jamaica, Lucky Valley plantation, Jamaica, Pen and Wharfe, details for operating a sugar estate in the West Indies in the years prior to the abolition of slavery and post-emancipation. Includes a first-hand account of events by directly after the emancipation of slaves / apprentices in Jamaica by Edward Thompson. (Full transcripts of all letters available on request). Including: 1: Dover 14 Feb 1829. Received London 4 April 1829. From James Shenton, Jamaica. To Henry Long Esq. C/O Messrs George Rutherford & Co. Camomile St. London. “I have deputed Mr. Hannaford, a highly respectable planter, residing within 3 miles of it, to act for me. And I would strongly recommend you and Mr. Oliver to send him a Power of Attorney for the Pen and Wharfe, and if the whole property belonged to myself I should appoint Mr. Hannaford my attorney, whilst I continue to live so far The late Wharfinger has been very deficient in his off delivery of articles received and is now in Spanish Town Gaol at my suit.” 2: packet post, to Henry Long Esq, c/o Messrs George Rutherford & Co, From J.W. Miller, dated Clarendon 6th Feb 1830. Per Packet "Spey". Feb. 9th. 1830. Recd. London. 13th. April 1830. Describes sugar crop at Lucky Valley plantation, Jamaica, “Your negroes are healthy.” 3: to Henry Long Esq, c/o Messrs George Rutherford & Co, Dated 16th Jan 1834. From J.W. Miller regarding Lucky Valley plantation, Jamaica, and Longville Park plantation, Jamaica. Discusses the end of slavery and the apprenticeship system. Poll tax for slaves and bonding stock. “The Holidays have passed by very quietly amongst the negroes in all parts of the Island as far as I have learnt, and we expect they will continue orderly after Slavery ceases and the Apprenticeship system commences on the 1st August - The time of labour being limited to 45 hours in a week, we much fear will operate against the Sugar Planters in taking off their Crops, but we are in good hopes that Parliament will make some alteration in this clause of the Bill.” “The Poll Tax is very high this year 10/- for slaves and 2/6 for Bonding stock.” (Notes: Henry Lawes Long is listed as the joint owner of the Longville Park estate Jamaica in 1825 – 1834 – he was a joint owner with James Shenton from 1826 – 1834. So this letter is from one of the joint owners to the other. William De Morgan (British, 1839-1917): 'Leo', a red lustre charger, circa 1890s, decorated in ruby and salmon lustre with a manned galleon in full sail, with lion figurehead, with the full sun and a flock of birds in the sky above, the underside with leaf border and concentric rings, impressed '24' to base, 5 by 36cm. Notes: see a similar example in the National Trust collection at Wightwick Manor, item NT1287681.

An 18ct yellow gold and diamond ring, set with a 1.0ct marquise cut diamond, 9.8 by 5.4 by 3.3mm, colour E, clarity SI2, surrounded by a double halo of small round brilliant cut 1.0mm diamonds, six further small round brilliant cut 1.5mm diamonds set to each shoulder, on a D form band 2.0mm wide, head 16 by 10mm, size D (fitted with reducers), 4.3g, in grey presentation ring box and outer cardboard box branded from Lanes Fine Jewellery, with GIA diamond grading certificate and insurance valuation issued by Lanes Fine Jewellery, Stamford, August 2024 for £12,850.

Provenance: from a deceased estate of the Napier family, with ancestral links to famous military and naval figures such as Sir George T. Napier KCB, Sir Charles James Napier, and Vice-Admiral Trevylyan Dacres Willes Napier.

A Rolex Oyster Precision stainless steel gentleman's wristwatch, ref. 6422, circa 1957, champagne dial with quartered sunburst guilloche ground, Arabic 3, 6 and 9 numerals and gilt arrowhead hour markers, silver and luminous hands and centre seconds, 17 jewels movement, cal. 1210, serial N61083, case 35mm, 19mm between lugs, on a later stainless steel 'Expandro' bracelet strap with deployment clasp, 68.5g. Notes: in working condition, winds and hands set well, keeps time across 1hr test, however Batemans cannot guarantee its continued operation.

A George III ormolu mounted ebonised musical table clock by Shuttleworth of Salisbury, with a triple fusee movement chiming on eight belts, striking on one gong, with repeat, the gilt engraved dial with silvered chapter ring and roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals, with chime, silent, and Westminster chimes and chime on eight bells adjustment, standing on claw feet, 44 by 26 by 67cm high, in working order.

A Pilkington’s Lancastrian vase, circa 1910, decorated with rampant lions amongst tall trees against a blue lustre ground, by Gordon Forsyth, shape number 2619, 16.5cm high. Notes: Gordon Mitchell Forsyth (1879–1952): Painter, stained glass artist and potter, born at Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. He studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, and at the Royal College of Art, completing his studies in 1903. He worked as a designer at Pilkington Tile and Pottery Company as well as serving as Art Director at Stoke-on-Trent School of Art.

An early 20th century French violin and bow made by Jenny Bailly (one of the first female violin makers on record), the violin with Bailly's hand signed label and numbered '553', overall length 23 1/4 inches, main body length 13 3/4 inches, the bow stamped 'Jenny Bailly' below the mother of pearl inlaid ebony frog, 29 inches long, together with original fitted wooden case, with some accessories. Provenance: Bought from Bonhams, lot 92 from 26th February 2007 auction, for a total of £1852.50

A George VI 1937 proof gold four coin specimen set, Royal Mint issue, comprising five pounds, two pounds (double sovereign), sovereign, and half sovereign, total weight 67.8g, in original red morocco leather case with gilt tooled GVIR royal cypher and 'Specimen Coins 1937' to the hinged cover, fitted internally with cream velvet, white silk above with gilt Royal Mint crest, 12.5 by 9.5 by 2cm. Notes: proof quality with only light surface scratches evident as well as slight toning visible on all coins.
