Nicholas Dimbleby (British, b. 1946): 'Duke Ellington, Maquette for Soho Square, 4/50', a bronze sculpture depicting the famous jazz musician and composer standing at a grand piano clicking his fingers keeping time, on a circular base, signed, titled and numbered to edge of base, 21 by 33 by 48.5cm high.
Provenance: From the deceased Estate of Peter Boizot MBE (1929-2018), the founder of Pizza Express and previous owner of Peterborough Football Club, The Great Northern Hotel and The Broadway Theatre, who was born and died in Peterborough. He was well known as an engaging and cordial host, a great philanthropist and as a lover of jazz, hockey and of course pizza.
Notes: the sculptor is the son of Frederick Richard Dimbleby, CBE, an English journalist and broadcaster, two of his siblings are English television presenters David and Jonathan Dimbleby.
This maquette was cast for a life sized sculpture commissioned by Peter Boizot for Soho Square, London, near Ronnie Scott's, for the Soho Jazz Festival that Mr Boizot founded, it was installed in 1998 but was removed after planning objections to the gardens of The Great Northern Hotel in Peterborough. It mysteriously disappeared in 2009 around the time the hotel was sold to a company which subsequently went into liquidation, however the sculpture was not part of that sale. Mr Boizot spent great effort and time in attempting to retrieve the sculpture, even offering a cash reward, however the police closed the investigation in June 2010 'having exhausted all lines of inquiry' without ever finding it.
