The Burghley Chair: a Victorian heavily carved oak Armorial hall chair, dated 1866, profusely carved with a rampant, collared, and chained lion on an armorial shield, phoenix, eagle, lion and snake carvings surrounding a central roundel with leaf borders depicting a view of Burghley House, the shaped seat with a border of sixteen roses and scrolling foliage, above a deep apron with dated shield to the front flanked by two dolphin fish, all raised on lion monopodia front legs and scaled back legs with lion mask capitals, 47 by 50 by 119cm high.
Notes: carved by Allen W Rippon (or Rippen), the maker adopted Rippon, in place of Rippen from 1871, apparently there were four chairs, one owned by the vendors father and one by their uncle, two being in Stamford town hall with different carvings of The Priory and Brazenose Gate.
